Milan, Ti Amo

A week ago if you had asked me what my favourite fashion week is, Milan would not have been at the top of my list. As I perused this season’s Italian collections I began to wonder why it is that I favour all other fashion weeks above Milan. I couldn’t come up with a good answer to that question. The designs were stunning. So stunning in fact, that I had to choose five top looks this week. Milan, you have changed my mind. I love you.

Local and Opulent Milan FW 1

This season, Unkle Karl sent punk models donning multi-hued mohawks down the Fendi runway. Great, now I want a purple mohawk.  As a proud Canadian girl, I am always scouring the collections from amazing outerwear trends. The bold coats at Fendi are sure to make even the grayest winter day a little brighter. I must also add that I am thrilled to report that the over-the-knee sock trend is back for fall! What can I say, I worship Cher Horowitz.

Local & Opulent Milan FW 2

Prada was bold from red lip to gold toe. I’m not sure what I love more; this aqua leather and fur embellished coat, or the gingham A-line skirt. I am feeling inspired to go on one fabulous picnic in that ensemble.

Local & Opulent Milan FW 3

Canadian duo Dsquared created one of the funkiest catwalks of the season. Men’s wear was the name of the game and each fantastic look was topped with a playful hat. I am in love with this feminine version of the tuxedo; glitter, bow tie, fur peplum, satin trousers and a fine chapeau; my head is saying no but my heart is saying yes, Yes, YES!

Local and Opulent Milan FW 4

This season at Missoni, they must have been thinking, what can we design that the charming Canadian blogger at Local & Opulent will just flip for? Every. Single. Piece. That’s what! Loose, comfortable and simple cuts dominated this runway. I love the pajama dressing trend and nobody does it better than Missoni.

Local and Opulent Milan FW 5

This season at Pucci was a throwback to the 1960s. All I want in life is to perfect that perfectly teased hair, precisely lined eye and pouty nude lip that defines ’60s beauty. I am not exaggerating when I say that I want to own every single look from this collection. Those boots are made for walking and they are made for my feet (size 38 please).

What looks from Milan are you excited to be rocking come fall?

Round Here

Local & Opulent 70s 5

Toronto is an incredibly casual city, especially on weekends. This past Saturday my boyfriend and I went for a relaxed brunch date, followed by an afternoon of running errands. I wanted to look chic and still be cozy. Inspired by my favourite hat, from Canadian retailer Club Monaco, I channelled the ‘70s and threw on my trouser jeans for a totally laid back nod to the past.

Do You Prefer Fashion Victim or Ensembly Challenged?

The only thing better than choosing a “Best Dressed” list, is compiling the “Worst Dressed” one. A lot of the time the folks who qualify for “Worst Dressed” are the ones who are bold enough to take a fashion risk. I respect that! I was hoping for a “Bjork Wearing Swan” moment on Sunday night, but there was no such luck. Without further ado, here are Local & Opulent’s picks for the Oscar’s Worst Dressed Celebs of 2013.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

3. One of the worst crimes against fashion came from Kelly Osbourne, wearing Tony Ward Couture. There is nothing worse than spending three hours (or an entire awards season) listening to fashion critique from someone who looks like a mess. Kelly, I suggest you take some of your own style advice, it’s good, but that look is not.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

2. I hate having to put Melissa McCarthy on this list. I have loved her since the very first episode of Gilmour Girls in which she played kooky chef Sookie St. James. While the colour of this David Meister dress is not working with her complexion, the sloppy tailoring and way over teased hair are the real fashion crimes here. Sorry Melissa, but I still love you!

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

1. Kristen Stewart. You have so few words for us, so in honour of you I will keep this as short as possible. Brush your hair and don’t stand up your tailor next year.

See, this list would have been much more fun had somebody been wearing a swan. So readers, what do you think of my Worst Dressed List? Agree? Disagree? Have any other crimes against fashion that you would add to the line-up?

And the Oscar Goes to…

I have to admit that the only reason I really tune in to the Oscars is for the three hours of red carpet coverage leading up to the event. It is supremely satisfying to spend a Sunday evening sitting on the couch in your sweats, judging other people’s fashion choices. That, and watching Ryan Seacrest address Hollywood’s collective eating disorder on live television.  Awkward.

I have to admit that I was a little bit underwhelmed by the red carpet last night. After keeping a close eye on the awards season, I was hoping to see some major fashion drama! Unfortunately for me, the fashions were very “safe”. However predictable the looks, there were some ladies whose choices did take my breath away! Today I present to you my selections for last night’s Oscar Fashion Winners. They may not have taken home the gold man himself, but they have won gold (in my heart) for their phenomenal sartorial successes.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

5. In fifth place we have Halle Berry wearing a metallic striped Versace number. This dress is so “Bond Girl” which is fitting for the James Bond Tribute that she presented last night. I selected Halle for the number 5 spot based on her bold garment selection. I know that this dress my be a controversial pick for the best dressed list – my mother texted me last night just to let me know how much she hated Halle’s dress!!! (She used a lot of exclamation points). But, based on the bold graphic stripes, the plunging neckline and the fact that she is ROCKING the chopped hair trend that dominated the evening, I say Halle sparkled her way to the top of the pack!

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

4. Charlize Theron can pretty much do no wrong in my book. We all know by now that she is one of the fabulous faces of Dior, so we could pretty much guarantee she would show up in Dior Haute Couture. She did manage to shock me when I actually got a glimpse of her newly  cropped ‘do’. I have always been obsessed with a girl that can rock a pixie cut. It is bold and fresh and not many can pull it off. Short hair was all the rage last night but no one was looking bolder or fresher than Miss Theron.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

3. Dear Kerry, you are my favourite red carpet fashionista. You never shy away from colour, print or texture. Your understanding of fit and fabric is sensational. You are genetically perfect. You and this Miu Miu dress are a match made in heaven. I love the bow detailing. That is all. Xoxo Lesley.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

2. Zoe Saldana is one of those girls whose fashion I always want to love – but don’t. Thankfully for me, she showed up last night in a dress by Alexis Mabille. She was perfection. Every little bit of the look is spot on. The embellished bust line was what initially grabbed my attention, but it was the ombre train that sealed her fate as one of the top fashionistas of the evening. Though she walked the red carpet alone, we all know that later that night she had the ultimate accessory on her arm, rumoured boyfriend Bradley Cooper. Swoon.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

1. She won Oscar gold and now she has won fashion gold. We all saw the debut of Jennifer Lawrence’s Dior ads earlier this week, so it was a given that she would be the belle of the ball, parading down the red carpet in the French fashion house’s ultimate haute couture dress. What wasn’t a given was that a girl like me, a girl who detests anything too “girly”, would fall head over heels for this pale pink ball gown. The hair was incredible, but what sealed the deal was the necklace that Jennifer wore down her back. There is nothing cooler in the world of accessories than finding the ultimate moment to rock a back necklace. Rock it she did. Plus, she delivered the high light of the Oscar’s evening (no, not when she fell), when being interviewed by Ryan Seacrest, she hiked up her Dior and admitted how hungry she was. Love JLaw.

Honourable mention goes out to Amanda Seyfried in Alexander McQueen, Jenna Dewan-Tatum for looking fabulous while that pregnant and Quvenzhane Wallis for rocking her puppy purse! Do you agree with my picks? Was there anyone that you would have added to the winner’s circle?

The Jewellery Local

Local & Opulent Jewellery Pop Up 2

Last night I stopped by The Jewellery Local pop up event. Set in a second story loft space, local jewellery designers and merchants gathered to network and sell their goods. There was a bar, cupcakes and shopping all located under one roof. Seriously, what more could a girl ask for?

As always, Elle Hardware had an outstanding selection of accessories to choose from. I definitely spied a ring or two, or ten that I would love to have gracing these knuckles! Sisters Lindsay and Hilary MacMillan are always stocking the most unique pieces at their Queen St. W. boutique. It was a great evening to grab a glass of wine and meet local Canadian talent. Plus, any excuse to shop is a good excuse. Right? Right.
